ping paint punch

Collaborators: Mathias Petræus and Klemen Lilija.
Entry for Nordic Game Jam 2019.
This is a collaborative paint punching VR game, and the first of its kind. One player stands on the blue platform, and another player on the orange. Slam! You punch a canvas with a colored, pixelated block, which leaves an imprint of that shape and color on the canvas and sends it flying towards your collaborator on the other platform. Using their own pixelated block, they punch it back towards you, leaving another imprint. Together, you must ping-paint-punch the canvas back and forth to recreate a piece of reference pixel art.
A build of the game is published on itch.io as part of the game jam. It was built for SteamVR and Photon, and setup instructions can be found there. It was also chosen for conservation by the Royal Danish Library.
This was my first full-scale game jam and it was a lot of fun. Nordic Game Jam is a very well-run event, and that year we had 103 games being developed over the course of a weekend in a large hall at Arkitektskolen in Copenhagen.
I’m very pleased with the creative process and end result. Mathias and Klemen were great collaborators, and I think we managed to create something that’s both fun and novel — hopefully to be repeated. I haven’t seen any VR games like this, but I think converting your physical motion to create art has a lot of potential. It was also great to demo the game and many people had fun with it during the showcase hour. Physical game jams are excellent for VR games, especially with a relatively complex setup such as a multiplayer game.
